The Brief

The client had recently moved to two electric vehicles and found the additional charging load pushing them into a higher tariff bracket. The goal was to shift as much charging as possible onto self-generated power without compromising household backup during outages.

The Build

AfriSunTech installed a 10kW hybrid inverter with 15kWh of lithium storage, alongside a 22kW dual-connector AC charging point in the garage. The charger was configured to prioritise surplus solar generation, drawing from the grid only when a vehicle needs a faster charge than production allows. Battery reserve settings ensure that vehicle charging never depletes the storage the household relies on for backup.

The Result

Both vehicles now charge primarily during daylight hours at effectively no marginal cost. Household backup performance was unaffected by the additional load, and the client’s monthly account has returned to below its pre-EV level. The setup is monitored through a single app covering generation, household consumption and vehicle charging.
